Innovative Use of Sustainable Materials

An “out-of-the-box” design concept for this 2 bedroom/2.5 bathroom condo in NYC’s midtown east neighborhood. The project came about when the clients, a young couple with two children, sought design advice while confronting damages to their building standard wood floors and portions of walls due to a flood. Sharing a mutual interest in natural sustainable materials and Asian-inspired elements, we were especially excited to showcase a variety of innovative materials.

Their initial misfortune created an opportunity to restore the apartment utilizing unconventional resources, as evidenced by our completely re-thinking new ideas for flooring. We specified off white color troweled concrete for the entrance foyer, living room, dining room, and kitchen which then led to custom designing a formed concrete countertop for the master bathroom.

Along with bamboo cabinetry in the kitchen and master bathroom, eco-resin panels are featured prominently in the kitchen cabinetry, back-lighted countertops and as a simple, elegant and practical top for the custom dining table. Authentic style Japanese shoji screens were custom fabricated for master hallway closets. Environmentally friendly custom colored Venetian plaster treatment was applied to accent walls.
